The DAW |
The idea for the development of the Dresden Anxiety Dictionary (in German: "Dresdner Angstwörterbuch", DAW) is just simple: We would like to create a reliable and valid computer instrument for analyzing different kinds of German texts according to the Gottschalk-Gleser anxiety scales. Our instrument is under further construction, all ideas presented here are temporary. Because we don't have the ability to create an own computer program (like the program of Gottschalk) we use the program CoAn (© M. Romppel, Bielefeld) for analysis. The DAW is, simply said, just a category system for this software.
The DAW consists of two dictionaries, one for anxiety and one for weights according to Gottschalk-Gleser. The second dictionary contains 417 words like "I", "you" "brother" "no fear" and so on, words that might indicate who is suffering from anxiety or is it a negation of anxiety. The main dictionary consists of 5535 words or phrases that might indicate the different kinds of fear (see the following table).
Anxiety Scale |
Number of Words | Example (German) | Example (Translation) |
Death Anxiety |
596 |
ermorden |
to kill |
Mutilation Anxiety |
1079 |
verletzen |
to injure |
Separation Anxiety |
1446 |
auswandern |
to emigrate |
Guilt Anxiety |
929 |
Mißbrauch |
abuse |
Shame Anxiety |
1047 |
schlechte Zensuren | bad grades |
Diffuse Anxiety |
438 |
fürchten |
afraid |
The analysis with the DAW is just simple. Texts must be written in ANSI-code. The first step is that CoAn marks all words from the dictionaries (anxiety + weights). In the second step CoAn searches for specified combinations of anxiety and weight-words. The result are Gottschalk-Gleser-Anxiety row-scores. Because the analysis is done by a computer we assume that objectivity and reliability are maximal. That's why the validity is very important. The next table shows the correlation coefficients (Pearson) between Gottschalk-Gleser anxiety-scores from the DAW-analysis and manual analysis. All correlations are highly significant. The 116 texts we used for these validation there scored from other colleagues, not from me. The table shows also the validity (Pearson-correlations) of Louis A. Gottschalks computer system (Gottschalk & Bechtel 1982, 1989).
